Collagen Peptides: Do they actually help with ageing?

We’ve heard the term collagen everywhere, but what actually is it? And does it really work? In this blog we take a deep dive into protein, peptides and everything in between. Read on to learn more:

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the human body, it is found in our skin, hair and nails and provides structure, support and strength for your bones, tissues and muscles. With age, our body starts producing less collagen which can lead to the appearance of wrinkles, rough and dry skin.

Peptides are smaller chains of collagen that have been broken down. Peptides can be easily absorbed by our bodies and may help with some skin conditions, muscle strength and hair loss.

Where are collagen peptides found?

There are many sources of collagen, including different plant and animal sources.  In the human body, there are four different types:

  • Type 1 makes up 90% of the collagen found in your body, and is responsible for providing structure to you skin, bones and ligaments.
  • The second type provides joint support and makes up cartilage in your body.
  • Collagen found in organs, blood vessels and muscles is type 3.
  • The fourth type is found in layers of the skin
  • The final type is commonly found in the cornea of the eye

Commonly found in powder or capsule form, most supplements are made from a combination of a mixture of collagen types to ensure you’re getting the most benefit.

Do supplements really work?

Yes! Collagen supplements are very beneficial for your skin hair and nails. There has been lots of research to support the benefits of collagen including:

  • Improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Reduces the effect of sun exposure on the face and increases moisture content.
  • Improved bone strength and mineral content (mineral density).
  • Stronger nails, and faster nail growth rates.
  • Improvements in wound healing

How do I choose what to get?

With the amount of supplements found today, it can be hard to know which are actually helpful. Here’s a few tips on how to choose what to go for:

  1. Consider how you want to have the it:  Although most commonly available in powder form, not everyone may find it practical to have every day. Opting for more convenient sources such as creamers and capsules can make it easier to be consistent.

  2. Check the ingredient label: Not all supplements are created equal, so make sure to check the ingredients for the types and amounts of collagen. A good supplement should ideally have hydrolyzed peptides for easier absorption.
